Thanks to the volunteers who last week learned scything techniques, as well as peening and sharpening from the wonderful teacher, Sima, whilst keeping the bracken at bay in our newly planted Community Orchard area.

“A nurturing day with spirits lifted by afternoon sun and souls grounded in working the land.“
“Thank you Sima for being a great teacher. It is a real craft to scythe and it is very good to learn about the care of the tools and techniques.”
If you are interested to learn scything techniques and would like to join us for our next bracken cutting session, drop us an email at threehareswoodland@gmail.com
We welcome our dog pals at Three Hares. What a great place for them to explore. We do ask, however, if people could please stop letting them pull tree guards off the trees. We have collected so many chewed tree guards on site and, sadly, have quite a few dead trees now that have been browsed. We work hard for this to be a place for everyone to enjoy, but we ask that respect is shown to all living things, including the trees. If your dog does pull off a tree guard, please replace it around the tree. If your dog is persistent in keeping destroying tree guards, we kindly ask you to keep them on a lead. With thanks.

Thank you, to a lovely group of employees from the Crown Estate who came for a Volunteer Day at Three Hares yesterday (13th May). What a lot of work we got done! 60 trees planted (donated by Auchendinny Community Garden), a big pile of wood moved into the site and all chopped, completing our Holz Hausen style stack. Power to your elbows! Safe to say this group smashed it!

Today we installed our new bench at Three Hares. Beautifully made, by Frazer Graham, from reclaimed Oak floor boards and church pews. Frazer was part of the Musical Forest build team so we were glad to have him back at Three Hares. Thanks to Midlothian Climate Action Network Seedcorn Fund for making it possible.

We value the importance of being able to sit still, peacefully in nature and the health benefits that brings. The bench is just inside the entrance to Three Hares, which is not only a perfect viewpoint to look over the land, but it is accessible to those who cannot manage the steep slope into Three Hares. We hope you enjoy.
Dust off your work gloves, and join us at Three Hares this Sunday from 11am-3pm.
Bring the usual water, snacks etc you may need. Drop in or come for the whole session. Work to your own abilities. No previous experience necessary. See you there?
Our wonderful, wild partners Midlothian Wildflowers are hosting a ‘Herbal Wildflower Tea And Tincture Workshop’ at The Steading, Rosewell on 4th May. Join the gathering! See attached poster for details.

The clocks Spring forward this Sunday, and as it is the last Sunday of the month, we spring into action for our Volunteer Day, 11am-3pm.
Come and join us, no previous experience necessary! Work to your own abilities. As usual, bring lunch/snacks and drinking water. We have work gloves, but bring your own if you prefer.

Sad to hear the news of the passing of Ali, who died on 26th December 2023.
Ali was a big character, and an enthusiastic volunteer who helped build the hut at Three Hares. He was good craic, loved being in the outdoors, always played with the dogs on site, quite often had a joke to tell (What was Beethoven’s favourite fruit? Ban-nan-nan-naaaa) and a song to sing (was a smooth crooner around the camp fire!). He always looked out for others and with his partner in crime Davy, simply put, they got stuff done. You will be missed, pal.

Thanks to all the Volunteers who came down yesterday (Sun 25th Feb), including the mighty Dirty Weekenders Crew from Edinburgh Uni.
We planted the Community Orchard! We also laid some mulch mat around the base of the trees to give them a bit of support in thriving, next job is to fertilise with manure. In the future we look forward to sampling the heritage apples: Lass O’Gowrie, Stobo Castle, James Grieve and Hoods Supreme. Thanks to Appletreeman, Perthshire for propagating the trees, and to Volunteering Matters Action Earth for funding, alongside Crown Estate Environment grant.
We also managed to get some wood moved, chopped and stacked so as our groups can wake the fire when they are on the land. We enjoyed time around the fire yesterday, a reminder of how the Volunteer Days are great for getting work done, but also the time spent with others chatting around a fire is food for the soul.
Join us on the 31st March for our next volunteer day!
