Thank you Green Team!

Last weekend (Sunday 10th Nov) the Green Team came back to Three Hares to do some more much appreciated work on the land. They helped us look after our planted trees by re-staking and replacing some tree guards to help protect the trees from being munched by deer. Unfortunately this is an ongoing job as some dog walkers are still sadly allowing their dogs to pull off tree guards. Thank you Green Team.

The crew also enjoyed some time at the Musical Forest, as well as having some solo time to write and reflect. One of the young folk, Alexander, took this time to write a poem:

Dear Three Hares,

With your rotting bracken

And trees so bare

Where once you housed both man and bear

Where once to the fires we fed

With sticks and twigs and leaves of dead

With moss and mud we made our bed

Where once you gave us life and death

But now we take your wood and grass

To supply our ever growing hunger in mass

But to the chaos of the human mind

And the peace that never seems to last

But wait, there is still hope

The green team, a mighty troop

To give back to nature that lets us cope

To return the trees that once did stoop

My dear Three Hares

With rotten bracken

And trees so bare

Where once you housed both man and bear

We care.

We look forward to welcoming back the Green Team in the New Year. Go Team!

Musical Forest Workshops 2024

Big thanks to Mischa Stevens who once again facilitated some brilliant Autumnal Musical Forest Workshops at Three Hares with kids from Gracemount Primary in collaboration with Trees and Seas Outdoor Adventures in the October holidays and Kaimes Autism School in the new term.

Today’s session went really well. The weather was perfect for autumn—slightly chilly but very sunny. Mischa, an experienced and engaging music teacher, brought so much energy and joy to the session. His enthusiasm really resonated with the children, and they were captivated by his sense of humour and passion for music. Some testimonials from the kids:
– “Oh, Rita, this is beautiful! It’s my first time in the forest!”
– “I’m definitely coming back tomorrow!”
– “I had so much fun!”

Thank you to everyone who made this possible for the kids:)’ –
Rita Budavari, Youth and Children Worker Transition Edinburgh South

Just wanted to say thank you again for such a great experience. The kids loved it. We really appreciate you taking us there and using the magical space.’ – Iain McLeod, teacher Kaimes Autism School

The workshops were made possible by funding from the Longstone Trust/Foundation Scotland. Travel to Three Hares was funded by Community Woodlands Association Pockets and Prospects Fund, thank you.

Free Introduction to Woodland Management Plans for Small Woodlands, 29th Sept at Three Hares

Join us at The Three Hares on Sunday 29th September, 11 – 3pm for our normal volunteer day, but with a twist! We will be joined by Alice Brawley from Small Woods Association who will combine our monthly practical woodland management task with an introduction to writing woodland management plans.

Woodland management plans can often be intimidating, and the aim of this session is to demystify them. This event will be a great opportunity to get a taste of what woodland management plans are all about in a supportive environment.

Please wear practical footwear and weather appropriate clothing. Refreshments will be provided but please take your own lunch.

Heads Up – Path Closure

Work began this week in preparation for the resurfacing works that are due to take place on the Old Railway Path from Auchendinny to Rosewell (a section of the Penicuik to Dalkeith Walkway). The resurfacing should commence on the 16th September, and as a result the path will be shut for about 9 weeks. Main gate access to Three Hares will not be accessible, we are told, for the first week of this. We are hoping the work on that section of path will be completed first, allowing us access again from 22nd September, finger’s crossed! We’ll keep you posted.

What do you see?

Jo and daughter Grace, who are regular visitors to Three Hares, sent us these stunning photos of a Peacock Butterfly from Three Hares at the end of August. It got us to thinking that we would welcome any other photos from visits to Three Hares which document the flora and fauna there.

Send them on to threehareswoodland@gmail.com and let us know whether you also give permission for them to be posted on our website and other social media.

Thanks Jo and Grace!

The Michty Green Team

Thanks to the Green Team for all the effort and hard work they put in on the land last Thursday (29th August). The group cut back a lot of the river walk path, which had become very overgrown with the Summer’s late growth spurt. Thank you, very much appreciated!

Sustainable Woodland Management Intro Events: 28th & 30th Sept.

‘Woodlands into Management’ is a series of events organised and facilitated by the Small Woods Association in partnership with small woodland owners and workers across the country.

These 1-day events aim to encourage and inspire woodland owners and managers to bring woodlands into sustainable management and overcome some of the barriers that might stand in the way. Each session will provide training, advice, and discussion on a specific aspect of the woodland management process, with experienced guest speakers offering insights.

Join us on Saturday 28th September at Willowburn Wood, south of Edinburgh, for an introduction to sustainable woodland management. James Chapman is a permaculture teacher, consultant and roundwood timber framer. He has been managing his own woodland for the past 8 years in a low-impact way for wildlife, fuel and timber.

The day will include a walk and talk of James’ woodland to understand his management approach, as well as receiving training and guidance on a practical woodland management task. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion throughout the day.

Thanks to FSC funding this event is running at low-cost. Places are available on a first come first served basis. General admission £5
